The Bread of the Passover

God is a master of imagery. Every book in the Bible contains a continual display of symbols pictured in events, in objects, and in people all pointing to the redemptive purpose of Jesus. Jesus, Himself, spoke in parables, which are word pictures that contain a meaning for us to grasp.
This is true of the Bread that is served at Passover. This bread has no leaven, no yeast, to make it rise. It is a symbol of the freedom God gave the Israelites when He delivered them from Egypt, known as the Exodus. God delivered them in haste from the hand of Pharaoh and because of this the bread did not have time to rise.
To commemorate their transition from slavery to freedom, the Jews celebrate a feast known as the Passover with the unleavened bread, known as Matzah.
Matzah is flat, unleavened bread, that also symbolizes humility. It has not puffed up like leavened bread, which symbolizes pride. When the Jews eat the Matzah, they are remembering the historic and redemptive act of God in the Exodus and the suffering their ancestors experienced while in bondage in Egypt.
During the Seder, the symbolic ritual meal celebrated on the first two nights of the Passover, the Jewish people sing, pray, and retell the story of the Exodus. To add a little fun, they hide a piece of Matzah for the children to find.
I remember a Jewish man who told me how he came to know Jesus by contemplating why they hid the Matzah. By revelation of the Holy Spirit to his heart, the Lord revealed that hidden Matzah was Jesus waiting for him to find Him. It was a profound life-changing moment for Him. He received the Deliverer of the Exodus as His own Savior that day.
The Matzah represents Jesus, the humble, suffering servant of God, who delivered God’s people. He is patiently waiting for you to find Him. Jesus is the Bread of Life.
